Xiaomi watch 5: xiaomi returns to wear os with emg sensing
Xiaomi just unveiled its latest wearable, the Watch 5, marking a significant shift for the brand. The device brings back Google’s Wear OS, now enhanced with an electromyography (EMG) sensor – a feature rarely seen in smartwatches.

Xiaomi’s watch 5 integrates an electromyography sensor for gesture control.
This isn't just another iteration in the crowded smartwatch market. The Watch 5 introduces a novel capability: an EMG sensor. This Technology measures electrical activity produced by your muscles, allowing for hand gestures like a double-pinch to cancel calls or a wrist flick to navigate menus. While competitors like Apple and Samsung have experimented with similar gestures, Xiaomi aims for superior sensitivity.
Beyond gesture control, the Watch 5 delivers standard smartwatch functions: notifications, calls, and a suite of health tracking features. These include heart rate monitoring, ECG, blood oxygen saturation, and stress level tracking – all accessible through the Xiaomi Health app, not Google’s Fitbit platform.
The 1.54-inch display is housed in a polished stainless steel case with sapphire glass on both the front and back, promising enhanced durability. A rotating crown and a dedicated workout button offer intuitive navigation. The watch face selection is extensive, with options ranging from functional to… well, questionable.
Xiaomi claims the Watch 5 will offer up to 6 days of battery life, and 18 days in endurance mode – claims yet to be independently verified. However, the transition to Wear OS naturally impacts battery performance compared to the previous HyperOS-powered Watch 3S.
The Xiaomi Watch 5 launches in Europe immediately at €299, but a US release remains unconfirmed. The absence of leather or titanium straps in the European launch is notable.
The integration of EMG Technology represents a bold step, suggesting Xiaomi is willing to push the boundaries of smartwatch interaction. The question remains: will this innovation resonate with consumers, or will it remain a niche feature?
