The battlefields of the future are being rewritten, and the war in Ukraine has served as a brutal catalyst. Traditional military doctrines, reliant on massed infantry and conventional weaponry, are rapidly fading as nations pivot to swarms of kamikaze drones. Now, China is positioning itself as the dominant force in this evolving landscape, unveiling a suite of laser and missile defense systems designed to neutralize the drone threat – a move that could fundamentally alter the calculus of modern warfare.

For years, the proliferation of inexpensive, easily deployable drones has presented a significant challenge to air defenses. The Guangjian-11E doesn’t always need to physically destroy a drone; it can disrupt data links, severing the connection between the UAV and its operator, effectively neutralizing the threat without resorting to explosive force. Complementing the Guangjian-11E is the Guangjian-21A, a vehicle-mounted laser weapon. Unlike traditional missile-based defenses, the Guangjian-21A can engage drones while on the move with remarkable precision. Employing high-energy lasers, it rapidly heats the drone's structure, degrading critical components like propulsion systems or communication arrays within seconds. Even drones guided by fiber optics—previously considered highly resistant to conventional defenses—are vulnerable to its electronic scanning and infrared sensors.

While drone swarms offer a low-cost offensive capability, the exorbitant expense of intercepting each one with a multi-million euro missile creates an unsustainable economic burden.
