For years, passengers have endured sluggish and expensive satellite internet options offered by airlines. Existing geostationary orbit (GEO) solutions, while present, suffer from crippling latency – often around 600 milliseconds – rendering them frustratingly slow for tasks beyond basic email. Adlane Fellah, founder of Maravedis, highlights the shared bandwidth issue, noting that “tens or hundreds of people” often contend for a paltry 10-80 Mbps.
But what nobody talks about is the sheer cost of these inadequate systems. Airlines have been hesitant to invest in upgrades, and passengers have been reluctant to pay premium prices for what amounts to a barely functional connection. The result? A status quo of digital deprivation at 30,000 feet.

Starlink: a low-orbit game changer
Starlink’s arrival represents a paradigm shift. Leveraging a constellation of 9,000 low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites—a critical distinction from GEO satellites which remain fixed above a single point—Starlink delivers speeds approaching 350 Mbps and latency below 99 milliseconds. Fellah compares it to “a good broadband connection at home,” capable of supporting video calls and real-time applications. This translates to a genuinely usable internet experience for passengers.
The implications are already being felt. Several airlines are beginning to integrate Starlink’s connectivity into their long-haul fleets. It’s a slow rollout currently, but the parallels to the proliferation of free WiFi in hotels over the past decade are striking. What was once a luxury is now expected – and the same trajectory appears likely for in-flight internet.
Fellah predicts that, within major North American and European airlines, free WiFi will be standard by 2028-2030. Budget and regional carriers, however, may lag behind, taking an additional three to five years – or potentially never adopting the Technology unless regulatory pressure compels them to do so.
The shift won’t happen overnight, but the writing’s on the wall: the era of frustratingly slow and expensive airplane internet is drawing to a close. The investment by airlines, coupled with the insatiable demand for connectivity, suggests that in-flight internet will soon be as ubiquitous as overhead bins.
