Starlink promises seamless skies: flight wifi finally taking off
Forget buffering mid-movie and exorbitant roaming charges. The era of frustratingly spotty in-flight internet is nearing its end, thanks to Starlink's disruptive entry into the aviation connectivity market. For years, long-haul travelers have endured a digital desert, but that’s about to change.
The legacy of lag: geo-stationary satellites fail to deliver
Traditionally, airlines have relied on geostationary satellites for in-flight WiFi. But as Adlane Fellah, founder of Maravedis, explains, these systems have consistently fallen short. The latency—the delay in data transmission—averages around 600 milliseconds, rendering many tasks, like video calls, practically unusable. Couple that with the shared bandwidth, often dividing 10-80 Mbps amongst dozens or even hundreds of passengers, and the result is a frustratingly slow and unreliable experience.
The cost is another significant barrier. Passengers are often forced to pay premium prices for subpar connectivity, a situation that has persisted for far too long. But Starlink presents a compelling alternative.

Starlink's low-earth orbit advantage: a game changer
Elon Musk's Starlink utilizes a constellation of 9,000 low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites—a crucial difference. Unlike geostationary satellites that hover above a fixed point, LEO satellites orbit the Earth, dramatically reducing latency. Fellah notes that Starlink delivers download speeds around 350 Mbps with latencies under 99 milliseconds – <>a performance comparable to a good home broadband connection. “Starlink is at a level comparable to a good broadband connection and the latency is low enough to allow video calls and real-time applications,” he states.
This leap in performance is already prompting airlines to integrate Starlink into their long-haul flights, though widespread adoption is still in its early stages. The shift echoes the evolution of free WiFi in hotels – a rarity just 15 years ago, now a standard expectation.
Fellah predicts that major North American and European full-service carriers will offer free WiFi powered by Starlink by 2028-2030. Budget and regional airlines might lag behind, taking an additional 3-5 years, unless regulatory pressures accelerate their adoption. The days of overpriced, unreliable in-flight internet are numbered.
The implication extends beyond mere convenience. Seamless connectivity at 30,000 feet unlocks new possibilities for productivity, entertainment, and communication, fundamentally reshaping the passenger experience. The future of flight is connected, and Starlink is paving the way.
