Spain's texmat project aims to simplify clothing recycling

The quest to simplify the process of selling used clothing has now found an innovative solution in Spain. TexMat, a European Union-backed project, is set to launch a pilot program in the country, promising a seamless way for individuals to recycle their garments and earn money in the process.

TexMat's cutting-edge Technology relies on intelligent containers equipped with automated analysis systems. These machines assess the condition, material composition, and overall quality of each item deposited, making quick decisions on whether the garment meets re-sale criteria or is destined for industrial recycling.

For those opting for the former, the system assigns a monetary value based on the item's quality, with higher rewards for items in better condition. The exact payout per piece remains undisclosed for now.

The pilot program, funded by a €6.25 million Horizon Europe grant, will initially deploy two containers in a high-density urban area and a less populated region. This dual approach aims to gauge user behavior and system performance in vastly different contexts, with data collected serving as a crucial calibration tool prior to potential nationwide rollout.

A consortium comprising the University of A Coruña, humanitarian organization Humana, tech firm IRIS Technology Solutions, and Galician company Rovimatica will spearhead the Spanish initiative. By offering a direct economic incentive, TexMat hopes to mobilize more people than traditional environmental awareness campaigns alone.

If the pilot proves successful, the TxtMat model could expand across the EU, transforming the way we approach textile waste management. The tech is ready; now it's up to citizens to respond.
