Spain's national police unveils digital id app, midni

Spain's National Police has announced the launch of MiDNI, a digital ID app enabling citizens to store and use their identification documents on their mobile devices. Set to go live on April 2nd, the app aims to streamline various transactions and prove legal identity in both public and private settings.

Convenience and efficiency

With MiDNI, users can present their digital ID during in-person interactions at establishments that permit minors, apply for bank accounts, lease vehicles, and access educational facilities. The app even allows individuals to formalize insurance policies.

Crime prevention is also a key aspect, as the digital ID can be configured to display only specific personal data, such as date of birth. This added layer of security alleviates concerns surrounding data privacy.

Legal standing

The MiDNI app has been devised in accordance with the Real Decreto 255/2025, which stipulates that the digital version of the ID carries the same legal weight as the physical document. This means citizens can now opt for a digital identification method that is equally valid for official purposes.

While the app has been available for some time, the official confirmation from the National Police serves as a reassuring message for those worried about potential fines for not carrying their physical ID.
