Samsung's foldables to keep older displays, despite growing competition

Samsung is expected to launch three new foldable smartphones this year, but all three might come with displays based on aging Technology, according to a report. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and a potential new model called the Galaxy Z Wide Fold could use M13 organic display material instead of the newer M14, which debuted on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Samsung prioritizes cost over display advancements

Despite being a major player in the display industry, Samsung is reportedly opting to use the older M13 material to keep production costs down. The M13 panels are said to be less expensive than the M14 Technology, which offers up to 30% better brightness, improved energy efficiency, and a 20% longer lifespan.

However, the lack of a major display upgrade might not be a significant issue for most users. Samsung's foldables already feature some of the best displays on the market, and the difference between M13 and M14 may be imperceptible to many.

Folding phones face increased competition

This year marks the first time Samsung will face intense competition in the foldable market. Apple is rumored to launch the iPhone Fold later this year, which could significantly impact sales, especially in the US. Huawei is also leading in China's foldable market, while devices like the Honor Magic V6 and Oppo Find N6 are gaining ground in other regions.

Given the growing competition, Samsung's decision to stick with older displays could potentially hurt its market share. However, if the displays still offer a high-quality viewing experience, the impact may be minimal.
