Ray-ban smart glasses face eu roadblock, meta's metaverse push stalls

Meta’s ambitions for wearable AI have hit a significant snag: the launch of its Ray-Ban smart glasses with integrated displays is indefinitely postponed in Europe, a blow to the company’s broader metaverse strategy. Regulatory hurdles related to battery Technology and artificial intelligence are proving to be a formidable barrier, despite early enthusiasm and strong US sales.

A battery regulation bottleneck

The core issue lies with the European Union’s upcoming battery regulations, slated to take effect in 2027, which mandate removable batteries in electronic devices. This seemingly technical detail presents a major design challenge. Incorporating removable batteries into the sleek Ray-Ban frames would require additional space, potentially shrinking battery life or forcing compromises in other features. Meta is reportedly in discussions with the EU, seeking an exemption for its smart glasses – and those of other companies – but the outcome remains uncertain. As US Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, bluntly stated during a recent event, “Where is the only place in the world you can't sell these glasses? In the European Union. Why? Because the battery isn't removable.”

Supply constraints & ai limitations add to the woes

But the battery regulations aren’t the only obstacle. A source close to the company revealed ongoing supply chain limitations are further complicating the rollout. EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban’s parent company, has seen its share price dip considerably this year, reflecting broader market concerns. While the company declined to comment directly on the situation, the impact is clear.

The EU’s AI regulations also present a significant challenge. The Ray-Ban Meta Display glasses rely heavily on AI capabilities, and launching them in Europe without full functionality would be unattractive to Meta’s leadership. This echoes a trend seen with Apple, which has had to curtail features in its software to comply with EU law. The postponement underscores the increasing difficulty of deploying cutting-edge Technology across the continent.

This setback comes as Meta retools its strategy, shifting resources from the metaverse towards wearable AI devices. The company initially touted plans to double production capacity of the Ray-Ban glasses by 2026, fueled by significant demand. However, the current situation casts doubt on those projections. Looking ahead, Meta remains engaged in discussions with Prada, a long-standing partner of EssilorLuxottica, to develop high-end AI-powered eyewear under the Prada brand—a testament to the continued belief in the potential of smart glasses despite current headwinds.

The immediate impact is a significant delay in Meta’s European expansion, and a reminder of the complex regulatory landscape facing tech giants. With a 10% drop in Meta's stock this year already, the EU’s stance on batteries and AI could prove a costly challenge.
