Rare Microsoft Surface Phone Prototype Emerges, Stunning Design Revealed

A prototype of a Microsoft-built Surface smartphone, codenamed "Raven," has resurfaced online, offering a glimpse into the company’s ambitious foray into the smartphone market nearly a decade ago. The design, dating back to 2013 or 2014, is surprisingly sleek and modern, even when compared to devices released in 2014 like the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5.

Microsoft’s Smartphone History

Microsoft’s interest in smartphones began in 2012 with the development of a Windows Phone. However, in 2013, the company acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services business, leading to a shift towards collaboration with Nokia to develop the Lumia lineup. The first Surface branded phone, the Surface Duo, launched in 2020 – nearly eight years after initial whispers of a Microsoft smartphone were reported.

The prototype showcased by Windows Central features the Microsoft logo prominently on its back panel, alongside a single camera and an LED flashlight. It highlights a period when Microsoft was actively exploring the smartphone space, demonstrating a design aesthetic that prioritized a premium look and feel.
