Pixel's recents menu loses key shortcuts in march update

Google's latest Pixel update, ostensibly bringing improvements with Android 16 QPR3, has quietly stripped away a handy feature many users relied on: direct image saving and Google Lens integration from the Recent apps screen. This seemingly minor change has sparked frustration among Pixel enthusiasts who valued the speed and convenience of these shortcuts.

A step backwards in app navigation

For those unfamiliar, the Recent apps screen—often called the overview—provides quick access to launched applications. Beyond simply displaying open apps, it previously offered a few clever shortcuts. A long press on an image within the Recent apps screen would conjure a pop-up menu offering options like Lens, Copy, Share, and crucially, Save. This allowed for rapid image downloads without leaving the overview.

But the March update has excised the 'Save' and 'Lens' options, leaving users with only 'Copy,' 'Share,' and 'Edit.' While image saving isn't entirely impossible—one can now navigate to the Share menu and then select 'upload to Photos'—the process has become significantly more cumbersome. The ease of a one-tap save is gone.

The removal of Lens integration is equally perplexing. Previously, a direct Lens shortcut within the Recent apps menu allowed for immediate image search. Now, users must either utilize Circle to Search, a newer Google feature, or once again, delve into the Share menu to find the 'Google Search Image' option. The initial pop-up menu offered a far more intuitive and swift solution.

While some Pixel users may never have noticed these shortcuts, for those accustomed to their efficiency, the change represents a frustrating step backward in Pixel usability. Google's rationale remains unclear; perhaps it deemed the feature insufficiently utilized, but the impact on power users is undeniable.

The move highlights a recurring trend: Google’s tendency to streamline features, sometimes at the expense of user convenience. It’s a reminder that even subtle changes can significantly alter the user experience.
