Nothing unveils phone (4a) pro: 140x zoom challenges flagship camera dominance

As Mobile World Congress concludes, Nothing has officially launched the Phone (4a) Pro, a mid-range contender packing a surprising 140x digital zoom—a feature typically reserved for high-end devices. The standard Phone (4a) arrives alongside, offering a more affordable entry point.

Snapdragon power & display refinements

The Phone (4a) Pro boasts a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, a step up from the 7s Gen 4 found in the base Phone (4a). This translates to a noticeable boost in CPU and GPU performance, with claims of up to 27% faster CPU speeds and 30% better graphics. While storage and memory options remain similar, the Pro model features a brighter 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, compared to the standard model's 6.78-inch AMOLED and 120Hz. Both phones utilize Gorilla Glass 7i for protection.

However, the real draw is the camera. The Phone (4a) Pro incorporates a Sony LYT700C 50MP main sensor, renowned for its color accuracy, and a 3.5x optical zoom telephoto lens, extending to a staggering 140x digital zoom—a feat that will undoubtedly be tested in real-world scenarios.

Design & software: a familiar aesthetic

Nothing’s signature transparent design continues with both devices, though the Pro model elevates the aesthetic with a more extensive Glyph interface featuring 137 mini-LEDs. This expanded Glyph setup allows for more intricate notifications and portrait lighting options. The Pro version also boasts an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance, a step up from the standard Phone (4a)'s IP64.

Both phones launch with Android 16 and Nothing OS 4.1, promising three years of Android updates and six years of security updates. The software introduces fresh icons and a new AI Dashboard, creating a more streamlined user experience. The Phone (4a) starts at €349 (~$405), while the Phone (4a) Pro begins at $499. Pro sales commence on March 27th.

The leap to 140x digital zoom isn't a substitute for true optical capabilities. The quality will, predictably, suffer at extreme magnification. Yet, Nothing is betting that this unique feature, coupled with its distinctive design, will resonate with consumers seeking something different.
