The System for Monitoring Driver Status (DMS), as it's called, is surprisingly lean in its hardware requirements. Forget complex, expensive sensors; it leverages a single camera and data gleaned from the steering wheel and vehicle speed sensors. After two years of rigorous testing and refinement, Mitsubishi Electric is preparing to integrate the DMS into its own vehicles and offer it to other manufacturers, a move that could fundamentally reshape automotive safety.
The impetus for this innovation is stark: Japan, despite its advanced technological infrastructure, grapples with a significant problem. While the 125 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in 2025 might seem low compared to the 12,000 in the United States that same year (a difference largely attributable to population disparity – Japan’s 123 million versus the US’s nearly 342 million), each death represents an irreplaceable loss. The statistics are chilling: a drunk driver is seven times more likely to cause a fatal accident than a sober one. The desire to reduce this unacceptable toll is driving Mitsubishi's efforts.
The DMS's evolution began in 2018 with a reliance on traditional algorithms, a far cry from the sophisticated AI it utilizes today. In 2024, a crucial partnership with the University of Oakland in the United States facilitated a significant leap forward. Researchers trained the AI using driving data collected from 100 individuals of diverse backgrounds – varying ages, genders, ethnicities, and levels of intoxication. This broad training dataset is key to the system’s accuracy and inclusivity.
How does it work? The camera focuses on the driver’s face, analyzing subtle physiological changes. The AI detects variations in skin tone—the telltale flush of intoxication—and monitors pulse rate. It also scrutinizes the eyes, looking for signs of drowsiness, glassy stares, or erratic movements. Simultaneously, sensors track vehicle behavior, noting abrupt steering, braking, or acceleration.
