The shift is a direct response to mounting criticism of the current approach. For years, Windows 11 has seen a migration towards web technologies, with applications like Clipchamp and even Microsoft's own Copilot increasingly reliant on web frameworks. This has resulted in complaints about increased resource consumption, sluggish load times, and a general lack of integration with the core Windows experience. The move echoes a similar, and arguably less successful, decision by Meta to abandon a native WhatsApp app in favor of a Chromium-based PWA, a change that notably increased the application’s memory footprint.

While PWAs offer cross-platform compatibility, they often struggle to match the performance and responsiveness of truly native applications. But the term “native” itself is becoming increasingly complex; many apps currently considered native still rely on web components to some degree.

A wholesale rewrite seems unlikely, but some degree of optimization or migration to native code is probable.
