Iphone 18: smaller dynamic island returns, bezel size stays put
After a year of speculation and a rather disappointing lack of change, the iPhone 18 Pro series might finally deliver a visual refresh – albeit a subtle one. Leaks circulating from Chinese social media platform Weibo, attributed to reliable leaker Ice Universe, suggest a return to a smaller Dynamic Island, a feature many presumed lost to the sands of iterative design.
A shift from punch-hole dreams
The road to this potential redesign has been circuitous, to say the least. Initial whispers pointed towards an iPhone 18 Pro sporting a punch-hole cutout to house the front-facing camera, with Face ID components relocating beneath the display. Later reports, however, indicated a more modest approach: shrinking the Dynamic Island while keeping the dot projector and infrared camera for Face ID in a miniaturized version. The recent, rather deflating, claim that the Dynamic Island would remain unchanged for another year cast a long shadow – until now.
The appeal is clear: while most users are unlikely to lament the absence of even thinner bezels – flagships already boast impressively minimal borders – a more discreet Dynamic Island represents a tangible improvement to the user experience. It’s less intrusive, less distracting, and contributes to a more streamlined aesthetic.
But let’s be honest, this feels like a concession rather than a revolution. The initial ambition of completely removing the notch and integrating Face ID beneath the display created a certain anticipation that this more incremental change fails to fully satisfy. Still, a refinement is a refinement.
The iPhone 18 series is shaping up to be more of an evolution than a reinvention. Beyond the potential Dynamic Island tweak, the Pro models are expected to boast a 2nm chipset, improved battery life, and advancements in camera Technology. Apple's increasing reliance on in-house chips promises greater efficiency across the board, although the standard iPhone 18 variants will likely have to wait until next year for these premium upgrades.
The question isn’t whether the iPhone 18 Pro will be a compelling device – it almost certainly will. The real question is whether a slightly smaller pill is enough to excite a market increasingly demanding more substantive innovation.
