Justin Gwynn and Hilde Elise Heldal, researchers leading the Norwegian investigation, have detected radioactive material emanating from a ventilation pipe – a direct consequence of corrosion within the reactor's fuel rods. The good news, for now, is that the release appears to be controlled, with only small amounts of radioactive material being dispersed by the strong currents. But the specter of a larger, uncontrolled release remains a stark possibility.
