Apple airpods max 2: a $20 discount doesn't justify the price
Apple's surprise unveiling of the AirPods Max 2 last week sent a ripple through the tech world – a ripple that quickly dissipated upon realizing the price tag remained stubbornly high. While the arrival of the H2 chip was anticipated, the lack of a significant price reduction has left many questioning whether this upgrade is truly worth the investment.

The $549 question: is it worth it?
The initial AirPods Max, launched in 2020, faced immediate criticism for its premium price. The second generation, despite improvements, continues this trend, retailing for a hefty $549 in five colors. Amazon is currently offering a modest $19 discount (roughly 3%) on the Midnight and Starlight color options, a fleeting reprieve that could vanish at any moment. This isn’t exactly a fire sale, and the caveat—shipping doesn't begin until April 1—only adds to the sense of cautious optimism.
Let's be clear: $19 off isn’t a significant markdown, especially considering the AirPods Max 2's already substantial cost. It's unusual to see a new Apple product, still in pre-order status, receiving any discount whatsoever, making this a noteworthy, albeit minor, development. But is it enough to sway potential buyers?
The promise of “elevated” active noise cancellation and improved sound quality, courtesy of the new H2 chip, is certainly appealing. However, for those not deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, the competition from Sony’s WH-1000XM6 and Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) presents a compelling alternative. Both offer comparable performance at a potentially lower price point.
The quality/price ratio remains a sticking point. While Apple consistently strives for premium materials and seamless integration within its own devices, the AirPods Max 2 appear to be trading on brand recognition rather than offering a truly transformative leap in performance to justify the continued exorbitant price. Unless you’re a die-hard Apple aficionado, the current Amazon offering doesn't quite make the case.
The Midnight colorway, frankly, is aesthetically pleasing—a muted elegance that sets it apart—but even a desirable color can't mask a questionable value proposition. The allure of Apple's ecosystem is undeniable, but at this price point, consumers deserve a more convincing argument for the upgrade.
