The company announced that the cumbersome process of sideloading apps from outside the Google Play Store will no longer need to be repeated with every new phone.

Previously, accessing this functionality required a 24-hour waiting period, device restarts, and the activation of developer mode. This was a significant change, designed to mitigate the risk of malicious app installations.

According to a new FAQ video published by Google's Android Developers account on X, the advanced sideloading flow is now linked to the device itself. Once completed on one phone, the setup is transferred to subsequent devices during the initial setup process.

“Once you complete the advanced flow on your current device, it transfers to your new phone during setup,” confirmed Matthew Forsythe, Google’s Chief Product Explainer, in the video.

The video also clarified that ADB installs remain unaffected by the waiting period, and apps cannot detect whether the advanced flow has been enabled. Perhaps most reassuringly, developer mode doesn't need to remain active after the process concludes. This is vital for users who rely on developer mode for banking and payment apps.

The initial tightening of sideloading restrictions in 2025 sparked considerable backlash from the Android community. Sideloading has long been a key differentiator between Android and iOS, representing user freedom and control.

While the one-time friction is a welcome improvement, some remain wary of the increasing control Google exerts over user choices on their own hardware. This shift represents a delicate balancing act between security and user autonomy.

For now, though, Google has delivered on a critical need, preserving a core aspect of the Android experience.
