Ai's data centers trigger heat islands, threatening millions
The relentless pursuit of artificial intelligence is generating a hidden climate crisis: data centers. While Nvidia and other tech giants reap massive profits from the AI boom, the energy-intensive facilities powering this revolution are creating localized heat islands, impacting the lives of an estimated 340 million people worldwide, including residents of Spain.

A new climate phenomenon: data center heat islands
A groundbreaking, collaborative study involving researchers from Cambridge, Nanyang Technological University, University of Genoa, Grenoble Alpes University, National University of Singapore, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has revealed a concerning trend. They've coined the term “data center heat island” to describe the phenomenon – a microclimate emerging around these sprawling facilities where surface temperatures rise significantly. Analysis of the past 20 years of temperature data shows that areas within a 10-kilometer radius of data centers experience an average temperature increase of 2 degrees Celsius.
The implications are substantial. While 2 degrees may seem marginal, the scale of the problem is staggering. The research found that under certain conditions, surface temperatures can spike as high as 9.1 degrees Celsius. This heat doesn’t dissipate quickly; it persists within a 7-kilometer radius, diminishing but not disappearing entirely.
The Spanish Case: Aragón's Rising Temperatures The region of Aragón in Spain is experiencing the brunt of this effect. Attracting billions in investment and creating numerous jobs, Aragón has become a hub for data centers operated by giants like Amazon (AWS), Microsoft, Blackstone, Vantage Data Centers, Azora, and Samca. However, this rapid development has come at a cost: Aragón is now experiencing a 2-degree Celsius temperature anomaly, a stark contrast to trends in neighboring Spanish provinces and the broader European climate.
“Our results demonstrate that the data center heat island effect could have a notable influence on communities and regional well-being in the future, and should be incorporated into the global debate surrounding environmentally sustainable AI,” states Andrea Marinoni, lead author of the study and researcher at the University of Cambridge. The sheer scale of the problem demands immediate attention and a reevaluation of the environmental trade-offs inherent in the AI revolution.
