The digital landscape just got a lot more treacherous. As artificial intelligence rapidly evolves, so too does the sophistication of cyberattacks, with experts now warning that impersonation, facilitated by AI, poses a uniquely dangerous threat to users.

Santiago Izquierdo, Head of Technology at Samsung Iberia, and Melchor Sanz, CTO of HP Iberia, both concur: safeguarding your data isn’t as complex as many believe. The core issue, according to Sanz, is the escalating risk of identity theft. “AI makes it remarkably easy to convincingly impersonate someone,” he stated, highlighting a shift in the attacker’s toolkit. The familiar vulnerabilities remain, of course – malware-laden emails and unsecured Wi-Fi networks continue to be popular entry points. The latter, often overlooked, represents a particularly fertile ground for exploitation.

Consider this: Target’s recent deployment of an AI agent for automated shopping. A simple error in its programming can result in financial repercussions for the consumer. But the larger risk lies in the more insidious threat of malicious actors leveraging AI.

Samsung is responding with proactive measures, including a new alert system that notifies users when an application requests potentially excessive permissions. Similarly, HP has integrated tools capable of identifying whether a video or audio clip has been artificially generated. While these defenses are valuable, they are not foolproof. The persistent danger of unsecured Wi-Fi remains a significant concern.

Izquierdo passionately advocates for activating “Secure Wi-Fi,” a feature many remain unaware of. “I don’t understand why more people aren’t using Secure Wi-Fi,” he remarked in a recent interview. When enabled, this feature automatically encrypts your connection when using public networks, effectively shielding your data from interception at airports, universities, or any other open hotspot.

Even if a hacker manages to breach your network security, there are further safeguards to consider. Sanz strongly recommends enabling Secure Boot, a lesser-known feature that prevents unauthorized code from running during startup, thereby protecting your hard drive from being accessed on another computer. Combine that with full disk encryption and a robust antivirus solution – “even the free Microsoft Defender is better than nothing,” Sanz insists – and you’ve built a considerably stronger defense.

The era of blind trust is over. The prevailing philosophy now is “zero trust,” a model that assumes all users and devices are potential threats, requiring continuous verification. This proactive approach is the most effective way to mitigate cyberattacks and avoid falling victim to online scams.

The numbers are stark: a recent study revealed that 68% of small businesses experienced a cyberattack in the last year. Complacency is no longer an option. As AI continues to evolve, so too must our defenses.
