A tired, panicked soldier is more likely to make a mistake than a well-programmed AI.

However, the prospect of an AI making the ultimate decision – the decision to take a human life – remains deeply unsettling. Álvarez Prieto makes his stance clear: “I wouldn’t want a machine making those decisions.”

International regulations are desperately needed, mirroring those established for nuclear weapons and landmines. But enforcement remains a significant challenge. The future hinges on whether the global community can establish clear ethical guidelines and ensure their widespread adoption – before it's too late. The clock is ticking.
