Muface crisis deepens as 24,157 civil servants flee to public healthcare
Spain's Muface Mutual has hemorrhaged 24,157 civil servants in just one year, a stark indication of the deepening crisis facing the institution. Between January 31, 2025, and January 31, 2026, Muface's workforce plummeted from 1,011,834 to 987,677, according to the latest available data.
Adeslas and asisa benefit, while public healthcare gains mutuals
After losing DKV, Muface's members faced a daunting choice: Adeslas, Asisa, or Spain's public healthcare system. Many have opted for the latter, drawn by the uncertainty surrounding DKV's departure and a shortage of specialists leading to lengthy medical appointments. This exodus is illustrated by the fact that 30,711 members exercised their right to switch health providers in January alone, with 4,281 choosing public healthcare.
The Central Sindical Independiente y de Funcionarios (CSIF) union has received numerous complaints from members alleging disparities in treatment, reduced services, and bureaucratic hurdles driving them towards Spain's public healthcare system. Muface insists the changes stem from a combination of members exercising their right to choose, new hires, and a decline in the number of beneficiaries per member.
New measures to address concerns and improve mutualism
Responding to these issues, Muface has established a commission with health insurers to monitor potential problems in healthcare provision. Following the Easter break, a working group will be convened to streamline administrative processes and improve mutualism. Muface has also been invited to participate in the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (SNS) to ensure Muface members are not disadvantaged when it comes to public health initiatives like cancer screenings and vaccinations.
These efforts aim to ensure a smooth transition and coordination of services for Muface members. The crisis at Muface shows no signs of abating, with the government exploring the hiring of temporary staff to activate early retirement for overworked civil servants.
