Ai fuels cybercrime surge: experts urge immediate action
The threat landscape just shifted. Artificial intelligence, once touted as a tool for progress, is now dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for cybercriminals, according to top tech executives. Santiago Izquierdo, Head of Technology at Samsung Iberia, and Melchor Sanz, CTO of HP Iberia, are sounding the alarm, insisting robust security measures are surprisingly simple to implement – if you act now.

The most pressing danger, Sanz warns, isn’t some sophisticated new malware; it’s the ease with which AI can now be leveraged to impersonate individuals. “It’s become remarkably straightforward to use AI to mimic another person,” he stated bluntly, highlighting a capability that renders traditional authentication methods increasingly vulnerable. This isn’t merely theoretical; the implications for fraud and identity theft are immediate and severe.
But the AI threat is only part of the equation. The usual suspects – phishing emails laden with malware, and unprotected WiFi networks – remain persistent vulnerabilities. Many users remain blissfully unaware of the latter, inadvertently exposing their data to malicious actors. Consider the Target experiment with an AI shopping assistant—a single error could translate to financial losses for the consumer. The situation demands a heightened level of vigilance.
Samsung is responding with a proactive approach, rolling out an alert system that flags suspicious app permissions. “We’re trying to catch those sneaky requests before they compromise your data,” Izquierdo explained. HP, meanwhile, is incorporating AI detection tools to identify deepfakes – audio and video manipulations that are becoming increasingly difficult to discern from reality. However, even these advanced safeguards aren’t a complete solution.
